In loving remembrance of Kheng Choo Campbell @ Tan Kheng Choo
Choo, born in Singapore, spent her childhood years filled with spectacular experiences and adventure.
Having attended Raffles Girls School and Anglo Chinese School, Choo had friends who stayed in touch with her through out her life, many of whom came by the family home this week or called to express their love of her and share delightful stories of their friendship.
Many recalled Choo was the first Queens Scholar from Singapore to study Literature at Cambridge University.
Her travels throughout Asia and particularly in the Malay Peninsula as a child included beach-side holidays, boating, and water-skiing which also instilled in her an appreciation for nature. Choo was a sporting girl who always approached sports and life with equal vigour and was not only a championship player for the netball team at RGS but also won her colours as a Ping Pong champion at Cambridge.
Choo met Donald in Singapore and during their marriage of well over 40 years, they lived at different times in Africa, Singapore, UK, and Taiwan. About 20 years ago Choo and Donald bought a beautiful country home in Scotland with sprawling grounds, stable yards and a walled garden that they enjoyed immensely. Animals were always around them Suggs and Gus their cocker spaniels were constantly by Choo’s side. In the garden were the peacocks Henry and Henrietta who fed from Choo’s hand and in the front field were the sheep including the orphans who Choo bottle-fed. Her horses Jess, Candy and Duchess, along with all the other animals (including Dad) would flock to her side upon hearing the “Makan!” as did neighbours, who enjoyed her cooking.
Her love for the outdoors continued and she took great pleasure riding Candy in the hills around their home in Scotland. When driving around the countryside Choo would always point out the numerous tracks and trails which she and her dear friend Alice enjoyed hacks together.
In their later years Choo and Donald divided their time flying regularly between Scotland and Singapore accompanied by MAC their dog, to escape the cold and spend time with their children and grandchildren. (the dogs had more air-miles with SIA than most people!)
Chuan and his daughters Bianca and Isabella live in Singapore and Helene their daughter lives in San Francisco.
Choo lived a most fulfilled life as a gracious, caring and loving woman who offered guidance, and words of wisdom to so many of us.
We were all so blessed to have been part of her life and to have had her in ours.
We will all cherish her memories in our hearts and thus she lives on..
