As you can probably appreciate, growing up with so many Grand-Aunts, was like having lots of lovely extra grannies, however when introduced and re-introduced to them by Ah Mak and mother, they were refereed to as gok-i-poh, sa-i-poh, lak-i-poh, etc which only later in my teens did I discover was just a numbering system.....

At Chinese New Year when organised chaos reigned, what with all the various families, relatives, friends and business acquaintances (along with their families) coming to visit Mak and Kong, everyone more or less mother's age just became Uncle or Aunty, and anyone older were addressed as kong-kong (grand-uncle) and or poh-poh (grand-aunt).... I remember that the poh-poh's in Ah Mak's various mah-jong groups tended to had out the larger Ang-Pows!

That said kong-kong William 2 thumbs (I think his family name was Ow) always gave us at least SG$ 10 if not more, and Jacob Ballas probably to please Ah Mak would usually give us SG$ 20, this was in the 1970's and when I look back the guests really were the WHOs WHO in from Singapore's business and Social elite at the time, as grandchildren we would be very busy acting as greeters and this was a most enjoyable and rewarding task, and we would usually manage to collect between SG$ 2k - 3k over the fist 3 days of CNY !!'
